Only in Spain: The Little Joys That Make Living Abroad Worth It

The Price of Four Hours in a Spanish Café? €2.50.
The other day, I sat in a café with a friend from 16:00 to 20:00. We ordered one cup of tea and one still water. That was it.
No one rushed us. No waiter hovered, pressuring us to order more or move on. We simply sat, talked, and lost track of time.
When we finally left (after tipping VERY generously), my friend turned to me and said:
“Only in Spain.”
And she was right.
The Frustration and the Magic
Spain, like anywhere, has its quirks and challenges:
Endless paperwork
Bank hours that seem allergic to convenience
Customer service that sometimes ghosts you
But it also has these moments. Tiny slices of beauty that remind you why you chose to live here in the first place.
Let’s name them.
Only in Spain…
…Can You Sit in a Café for Hours Without Pressure to Leave
In many countries, cafés are transactional. In Spain, they’re more like public living rooms. You’re allowed to linger, talk, think, breathe—without a side-eye or bill dropped on your table too soon.
…Can You Lose Track of Time Because No One is in a Hurry
Queues move slowly. People chat with the cashier. It can be maddening. And also… it’s an invitation to slow down. To remember that life isn’t a race.
…Can You Still Find Shops Closed for La Siesta
The siesta confuses many internationals. But there’s something radical about a culture that pauses midday. It values rest over productivity. And it challenges you to rethink your own pace.
…Can a Stranger Call You
Reina
or
Guapa
At first, it may feel like overstepping. Then you realise: it’s a cultural shorthand for connection. A way of saying, “I see you.”
…Can a Thursday Night Feel Like a Saturday
Spain doesn’t wait for weekends to celebrate. A casual drink can morph into midnight laughter and spontaneous plans. There’s an everyday joy here that defies scheduling.
The Expat Lens: What We See vs. What We Miss
As internationals in Spain, our gaze shifts.
At first, the slowness is soothing. The warmth of some strangers, the long sobremesas, the endless sun. It’s like a dream.
The language barrier. The bureaucracy. The ache of not quite belonging.
And we start to focus on the negatives. What’s missing. What’s wrong.
But here’s the truth:
What we focus on grows.
How Noticing the Good Changes Everything
Research in positive psychology and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) shows this clearly:
Where attention goes, emotion follows.
You don’t need to ignore the challenges of expat life. But when you also train your mind to spot the good, your emotional landscape shifts.
You make room for gratitude, connection, and calm.
A Simple Practice: One Good Thing a Day
Try this for one week:
Each night, write down one good thing that happened.
Something small, like:
A warm smile from a neighbour
A view of the city from your balcony
A kind word in broken Spanish
The way your coffee tasted
It might feel unnatural at first. But over time, this practice rewires your brain to see joy more easily.
And if you’re struggling to come up with even one good thing?
